Barricade Shooting 101: Standing, Kneeling & Real-World Position Tips

When it comes to precision rifle shooting, one of the most important factors in consistent impacts is stability—especially when shooting off a barricade. Whether you're up against a wooden barricade, a fence post, a rock, or even the hood of your truck, how you position your body can make or break the shot.

In this video, PRS shooter Camdyn walks through three key positions to help you get solid and stay on target: standing, double-knee kneel, and single-knee kneel. These aren't just competition techniques—they apply to any positional shooting situation where stability matters.

1. Standing Position

When shooting from a standing position, your base starts with your feet. Avoid the wide “surfer” stance—instead, place your legs straight out from your torso and aligned with the direction of the barricade. Depending on the height of the prop, you may need to lean forward slightly to make consistent rifle contact. The goal is to apply slight forward pressure while keeping your hips stable—especially in windy conditions.

Pro tip: Locked knees and slight forward pressure into the rifle help reduce wiggle and sway.

2. Double-Knee Kneel

The double-knee kneel offers a stable shooting platform when the prop is moderately low. With two points of contact on the ground, your torso remains upright and your bodyweight is centered. This allows you to lean into the rifle while minimizing movement.

It’s particularly effective when your elbow doesn’t naturally land on your knee in a single-knee position, leaving you without a reliable support point.

3. Single-Knee Kneel

The single-knee kneel shines in lower positions. Bringing one knee up allows you to brace your elbow directly on it—bone-on-bone contact that increases support and reduces muscle fatigue. Unlike the double-knee version in low setups, this position lets your torso relax, helps regulate your breathing, and prevents fatigue from setting in too quickly.

Bonus: Alternate Standing Position on Natural Props

Precision rifle shooting is about more than gear—it’s about mastering your fundamentals. These three positions can help you build a more stable foundation in your shooting, leading to more consistent results on the clock.
